Introducing our "Bold & Brave" Collection
When Senator Kirsten Gillibrand invites you to have a one on one breakfast with her, you stop what you are doing, hustle uptown, and prepare yourself to be wowed in her presence. Kirsten is the real deal. She's got this sort of no-nonsense vibe to her that makes you feel that you can rest assured (for the first time in a long time) that there are capable people in Washington. Yet she's also, remarkably, able to find humor in things - which I personally find so important in leaders. I walked away from the meeting thinking "Thank GOD for her!" I am a proud New Yorker who is even more proud to call her my state Senator. She's been hinting at a Presidential bid lately, and, tonight I'll be interviewing her in person on Bleecker St (! what is life even?!), and it's one of the few political questions I hope to press her on during our live in-store Q&A. You're all invited to watch on Instagram, and if you happen to be in NYC, come join us IRL (more details at the bottom of this letter). But this newsletter isn't about KG's (my self appointed nickname for her) politics. Today we are excited to introduce our latest collaboration, the "Bold & Brave" Collection - four sweaters inspired by Senator Gillibrand's new children's book: "Bold & Brave: Ten Heroes Who Won Women The Right to Vote." The book pairs Kirsten's words with artist Maira Kalman's glorious painted portraits of the early women's rights activists. KG has been consistent in her message to me and other groups I've seen her speak to post-Trump. And that is this: change is going to come from US (meaning you and me), NOT the politicians. From the Women's March to the students fed up with gun laws (or lack thereof) and organizing nationwide walk-outs, the power really is in the hands of the people. Which is why this book, celebrating the individuals like Elizabeth Santon, Jovita Idár, and many more, especially resonates today. We must keep these stories alive as we raise a new generation of activists! Add this book to your library and read it over and over again on those days when you're feeling powerless and voiceless. Gift it to your friends and family and remind them that they are powerful too! And, if you're feeling extra inspired, snatch up one of the four sweaters that we designed with Kirsten (who btw, loves pink!). Each sweater purchase comes with a complimentary book and will send $100 to First Book, an organization that has distributed more than 175 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families in more than 30 countries. I hope to see you tonight at 6 pm! xo Rachelle
