Our Commitment to Sustainability

We care. A lot. From the beginning, Lingua Franca has been about doing things with care—from what we make to how and where we make it. Our founder, Rachelle Hruska, started out by hand-embroidering phrases on thrifted cashmere sweaters in her living room. Today, while our team and product offering have grown, that same thoughtful, hands-on approach remains at the heart of everything we do.

Our Factories and Materials

Our materials are sourced close to origin to reduce impact and support expert craftsmanship; from Mongolian cashmere spun and knit in China at a Good Cashmere Standard–certified facility, to cotton shirting made in India using locally grown fibers and water-conscious practices. Our silk is woven in Sichuan, China at a facility that recycles 90% of its water and supports local education, while our alpaca and wool are crafted in Peru with responsibly sourced yarns and artisan partners who invest in their communities.

Certifications & Standards

We partner with suppliers who meet globally recognized standards for responsible production, including WRAP for ethical manufacturing, RWS and RAS for animal welfare, and OCS and GOTS for organic materials. Certifications like Oeko-Tex ensure product safety, while Amfori BSCI, Sedex, and the Higg Index support transparency and social responsibility across our supply chain. We also work with BCI for improved cotton practices, alongside scope certifications that verify materials and processes at every stage.

Looking Ahead

Our sustainability journey is ongoing, but it’s one we’re proud to be on. If you have any questions about our processes or garments, please reach out to info@linguafranca.nyc. We believe in shopping small, thoughtfully, and with care.
